Purpose
Equips learners to:
- Assess communities, households, and individuals
- Provide basic health education and referrals
- Support navigation of the health and social services system
Rationale
Supports South Africa's health system overhaul via the PHC outreach model. Designed to train Community Health Workers (CHWs) forming part of ward-based teams. Addresses national goals such as maternal and child health and school health services. CHWs will conduct assessments, promote health, provide basic interventions, and psychosocial support.
Entry Requirements & RPL
- Minimum: NQF Level 1 or equivalent in Mathematics and Communication
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): Allowed for access and assessment
Qualification Structure
- Knowledge Modules (40 credits): Public and community health, family services, community health basics
- Practical Skills (63 credits): Community mobilisation, health promotion, HIV prevention, maternal/child health, psychosocial support, etc.
- Workplace Experience (60 credits): Household assessments, health promotion processes, managing minor ailments, etc.
Exit Level Outcomes
- Assess community social and economic conditions
- Identify health risks at household level
- Promote healthy behaviours and home care
- Provide psychosocial support
- Identify and manage minor health issues
Assessment
External summative assessment (2-hour theory/practical exam) conducted by QCTO.
International Comparison
Aligned with similar CHW programmes in Brazil, USA, Kenya, and others. Emphasises practice-based, contextualised training. Broader and more integrated than many international short certificates.
